Global Vaccines

Eradicating Polio

Project Overview

In the advanced economies polio is no longer considered a health risk. However, poor sanitation in undeveloped and developing world settings leaves billions at risk of paralytic disease from polio. The World Health Organization, UNICEF and The Rotary Foundation started an effort in 1988 to end all cases of polio. Historically, there are two vaccines to combat polio, but neither may be sufficient in its current form to expect polio to be completely eradicated.

Global Vaccines is currently working on ways to improve the existing polio vaccines to make them more effective and help potentially enable the eradication effort.

Beneficiaries

Initially, the aim is to help men, women and children of populations in undeveloped and developing worlds. Ultimately, the advancement of this technology will not only help the intended targets but could also improve vaccines, generally, to the benefit of the global population.
